Yet another pedestrian accident has occurred in Seattle, this time downtown and involving a man who is still wanted by police. Seattle Police pulled over the driver of a gold Chrysler when he was found to be violating parking restrictions. The man failed to present a valid driver’s license, registration and insurance. This resulted in him speeding off into the intersection, against a red light and from the incorrect lane.

In his wake, he left a pedestrian who he had hit in a crosswalk. The impact broke the pedestrian’s leg, and they were taken to Harborview Medical Center.

Unfortunately the driver was not found. He had abandoned the vehicle after a chase by a King County Sheriff’s Deputy.

In this situation, there was obviously little the pedestrian could have done to avoid being struck. The driver was clearly on a warpath and the pedestrian most likely had little to no time to react. On an average day, however, there are usually things we can do as pedestrians to prevent being in an accident:

• Cross at marked crosswalks and intersections.
• Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible.
• Check for cars turning before beginning to cross.
• Make sure the drivers see you before crossing.
• When walking on a road with no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road.
• Be especially cautious at night.

We hope that this driver is found and properly charged with his crime. If you have any information regarding him or this incident, call the Seattle Police Department.
