Early Monday morning, November 15^th, a Honda Civic was being driven over the speed limit in Greenwood on North 105^th Street. The car was unable to negotiate a turn in time and their Civic left the road and the car collided with a wooden pole. Both of the occupants were transported to Harborview Medical Center because of injuries sustained in the car crash. The 23-year-old passenger was treated for several broken bones in the face and a fractured leg, while the driver may have sustained a broken sternum. Authorities suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved in this car crash.

Negligent driving can often lead to serious consequences. Whether driving under the influence or simply exceeding the speed limit, the driver is putting not only themselves, but everyone else on the road in jeopardy. For other drivers on the road, defensive driving is very important in avoiding a dangerous confrontation.

If you encounter a drunk driver or someone clearly exceeding the speed limit, remember to:

1.       Stay calm. If someone is tailgating or honking at you, there’s no need to speed up or be nervous.

2.       Steer clear. Change lanes to move away from the reckless driver and stay out of harm’s way.

3.       Call the police. Authorities will most likely have patrol cars in the area.

An update has been released on a Seattle drunk driving accident that sent four pedestrians to Harborview Medical Center. As mentioned in a previous posting, a drunk driver plowed through an unmarked crosswalk containing 7 pedestrians on 1^st Avenue South in Seattle.

The name of the driver has now been released and Juanita Wright, a 43-year-old West Seattle woman, and she is now being held on $250,000 bail for vehicular assault. Wright struck 5 pedestrians, 4 of which were sent to Harborview Medical Center, when she failed to stop at an unmarked crosswalk.

Wright failed a field sobriety test issued shortly after the car accident and was later found to have a blood alcohol content well over the legal limit at .29%. Empty and partially full beer cans were found in the vehicle and a six-pack of beer was discovered at Wrights feet in the truck.

Of the 4 pedestrians hospitalized, two remain in Harborview’s Intensive Care Unit. One 28-year-old female sustained severe head trauma, which required a portion of her skull to be removed. The other victim has been listed in satisfactory condition.

Wright is currently an unemployed teacher, but has a criminal history on her record and three alias names. Juanita Wright had another DUI charged against her in 1990, but the charge has never been resolved. And Wright has been convicted of theft under the alias Juanita Mars.

There is only one way to prevent these types of auto accidents from happening—everyone must do their part to be safe and not drink and drive. Protect yourself and others on the road by using a designated driver, or seeking a taxi or bus for transportation when you drink.

At 11:00pm, Thursday night (Oct. 28^th), hundreds of people were exiting the Showbox Theater on First Avenue in downtown Seattle. After exiting the theater and crossing the street, five pedestrians were struck by a drunk driver. One woman received life-threatening injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center and remains in Critical condition while the other four victims were treated for minor wounds and lacerations. As all of the accident victims were attended to, the female driver was arrested for driving intoxicated.

Delayed reaction time and impaired judgment are common side effects of drunk driving and can have serious consequences. Sadly, drunk drivers are more likely to end up in an accident than be caught by police and arrested. Always be sure to have a designated driver with you while consuming alcohol. And as a pedestrian you must be extra cautious of inattentive drivers. When walking down busy streets always be sure to cross the road at a marked intersection and always look both ways before crossing the street, even if it appears if there is little traffic.

Late into the night on Sunday, August 7th, Chantel Peters was driving with her 5-year-old son Daniel Exekiel on Yost Road east of Olden Way when she harshly navigated and sent the car off the road. The car crash sent the vehicle rolling along the side of the road until it finally rested.

The young Toppenish boy was not using proper restraints and was ejected out of the vehicle in the Seattle car crash causing him serious injury. The child was immediately rushed to Harborview Medical Center where he died around 9:45 p.m. Monday night. Peters now faces vehicular homicide charges for the death of her son.

I send my thoughts and prayers to the family dealing with this difficult situation. Losing a loved one or friend is extremely difficult and requires an extensive amount of time for grieving. Because of the difficulty of dealing with the loss of a loved one and my knowledge of the legal process I co-authored a book with colleague Patrick J. You may have heard about the crash in St. Paul, Minnesota, where a man by the name of Koua Fong Lee accelerated into another car between 70 and 90 mph, resulting in the death of two people. Lee was convicted of vehicular homicide and was sentenced to eight years of jail time. His original lawyer believed that his client just accidentally hit the accelerator rather than the brakes, but new attorneys are claiming that the fault lies in the 1996 Camry that Lee was driving. The new lawyers have attained 10 affidavits from other people with the same vehicle who say that there were acceleration problems with the car. The prosecution in the case is opposing a new trial, and they continue to stand by their stance that the acceleration was caused by Lee stepping on the accelerator.

We will see if this new plea holds up in trial and in the Jury finds fault to remain in the hands of the driver or if it lies with the manufacturer.

Early last Sunday morning, a 27 year-old-man’s car crashed into a tree in North Seattle, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. There were two passengers and a dog in the vehicle as well, however they are alive and sustained no life-threatening injuries. The accident happened as the victim was driving north on 24th Ave. NE at 1:33 a.m. and was unable to manage a turn onto NE Northgate Way. His Acura Integra veered off the road and into a tree.

Accidents like these are always difficult to hear about, and our condolences go out to the family of the driver who lost his life in the crash. Driving late at night and into the early morning comes with added risk because visibility decreases. If you find yourself in a situation where you are driving late at night, like in the tragic accident above, please drive with added caution and alertness.
