The use of live streaming traffic cameras have been placed in addition to the old still cameras throughout the city. These new cameras will be able to provide updated information regarding the flow of traffic, calculate estimated drive times, and include current construction projects. The cameras are also able to automatically adjust traffic signals as a direct result of the current pace of traffic. SDOT officials will be able to monitor the traffic conditions and make manual adjustments as need be. Following a recent three-car accident, investigators have concluded that one woman’s act of using the middle finger to signal disdain with another driver set off a chain of events that resulted in a multiple-car pileup and significant personal injuries.

According toWashingtonauthorities, the 23-year-old female driver was operating her 2004 Ford Taurus when she attempted to change lanes on a busy public highway. In doing so, the driver quickly realized that another vehicle was in the lane positioned where she was trying to merge. Instead of exercising patience and caution, the driver gestured in an obscene manner toward the other driver. While gesturing to the other driver, the motorist in the Taurus lost control of her vehicle causing it to careen into the other driver and both were forced off the roadway. In addition to significant injuries and property damage, the driver of the Taurus was charged with reckless driving.

On Wednesday, a suspected drunk driver was arrested after hitting a parked car and flipping his vehicle with an infant and a three year-old with him.  According to police, the man was going north on 12^th Ave in the Capitol Hill neighborhood when he hit a BMW, flipping his car. After the accident, the man grabbed the children, crawled out of the overturned car, and ran away from the scene of the accident. After he ran away, police were able to catch up with him and the children were taken to Harborview as a precaution because they were so young. The driver was arrested on suspicion of hit and run, DUI, and reckless driving. After investigation, it was found that the driver’s car had an ignition interlock device meaning he had previously been convicted of a DUI, vehicular assault, or vehicular homicide involving alcohol.

It is clear to me that the state’s attempts to curb the problem of drunk driving are not working. Despite the fact that he had a previous conviction for something involving drugs or alcohol the driver was still able to operate his vehicle while drunk, probably through manipulation of the device. Recently we have seen multiple drunk driving incidents involving people who have previously been convicted of driving under the influence, like this arrest. At what point does our state need to impose harsher penalties on drunk drivers, especially the repeat offenders that make up two thirds of drunk driving arrests?

As the leading cause of fatal accidents in the United States, drunk driving has become too big a problem to give out slaps on the wrist for.
