Thursday January 27^th Morales Singer of Selem Oregon was walking along 47^th Ave NE in Salem when the accident occurred. Around 11:30 pm Singer was walking home from Shooter’s Café & Saloon, a local bar where Singer was participating in trivia night. An older Honda Accord struck Singer and then fled the scene. When emergency aid arrived Singer was pronounced dead from extensive injuries.

Police had been on the lookout for the Honda which was missing its right side mirror, had a broken headlight and extensive damage to the front bumper and hood, but on February 1^st the driver turned himself in. Jake Montano a 19-year-old from Oregon claimed he was driving about 45 mph and texting while driving when he struck Singer. He also admitted that shortly after the accident he rushed his car to a mechanic to have the damage repaired.

Singer was a 37-year-old father of three who also took care of his parents in his Salem home. Montano has been charged with second degree manslaughter and failure to perform the duties of a driver after a crash, tampering with evidence and two counts of driving on a suspended license.  Montano is being held without bail.

Cell phones now have the capabilities to handle text messages, e-mails, sync with outlook or google calendar, browse the internet and navigate you from place to place. Though all these advancements make cell phones a one-stop shop for many of life’s newest necessities it also makes cell phones a very dangerous distraction while on the road. What is most sad about all of these fatal texting while driving accidents is how easy they are to prevent.

Just last week, a musician that was formerly drummer for Iggy Pop was killed in a California hit-and-run accident. 47-year-old musician Alex Kirst was walking on a highway near Palm Springs January 13^th when he was struck by a vehicle. Another motorist reported a man lying in the road at approximately 11:30 p.m. thinking it was an intoxicated man. Kirst sustained life-threatening injuries which he later died from.

Based on the lack of skid marks in the road it appears the driver failed to break. Police are now looking for a white Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon missing headlights which were damaged in the accident. Anyone with information about the accident or the vehicle in question is asked to contract police.

As mentioned above, California has far more hit-and-run accidents than any other state and the stretch of road Kirst was killed on has seen 6 pedestrian fatalities in the last 7 weeks alone. Tuesday, December 14^th marked the start of this string of heinous hit and run accidents. Police have sited speed as a major factor in the Lacey, Washington accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy as he slept in his bed. An SUV sped through and intersection and crashed into a house in Lacey, Washington. The crash occurred around 12:30 am and 16-year-old Austin Blankenship was killed by the rampant SUV. The driver of the SUV, 27-year-old Bobby Hicks fled the scene, but was later apprehended.

Another house fell victim to a hit and run driver in Mercer Island on Wednesday December 22^nd. The driver failed to stop at a traffic stop, speeding off and crashing into a Mercer Island home. The incident occurred at the 60000 block of Island Crest Way in Mercer Island, Washington. The car crash left the living room of the house in a mess right before the Holidays, but luckily nobody was injured in the accident.

The following day, December 23^rd a hit and run accident let three pedestrians with minor injuries when they were struck by a driver in Tukwila. Shortly after 5:30 a driver struck the pedestrians at Strander Boulevard and Andover Park West and fled the scene. The driver was later apprehended when he returned to the scene of the accident.

The final car crash sadly occurred on Christmas day. A 28-year-old female was found lying in the road with severe injuries in Auburn, December 25^th. Police speculate the young woman was fatally struck by a vehicle which fled the scene without a trace. The woman was found at the 1200 block of Auburn Way South in Auburn- she died at the scene. If anyone has any information regarding the accident they are asked to contact police.

Around 9:15 on August 8th two males were killed in a hit-and-run accident while they road their non-street legal dirt bikes on Golden Givens Road in Pierce County. The 22-year-old man and 16-year-old boy were traveling at high speeds when a white Chevy pickup turned left in front of them- instigating a crush that left the two victims dead. The victims were not wearing helmets and did not have headlights on their dirt bikes- both which could have saved their lives.

Since the victims were not practicing proper road way safety and were without headlights the driver of the truck most likely would not have been charged. The driver, however, fled the scene making him now wanted for a hit-and-run accident.

According to sources the younger male had just celebrated his 16th birthday that same weekend and the 22-year old leaves behind a young daughter.

This weekend in Everett, 45-year-old, Roberto Beltran, was killed in a hit-and-run accident, and the culprit has yet to be found. Beltran was crossing a south Everett street when he was hit by a Ford Ranger which fled the scene. Beltran was then struck by two other vehicles while he lay on the ground. Police are on the lookout for a stolen dark-blue 2005 Ford Ranger, Washington license B35457F that they believe to have hit the Everett man. The suspect is also believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day outside of a tavern in Lynnwood.

Just last week, a 24-year-old Everett man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident near Mill Creek. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday in the 1300 block of 136th Street.

Two people were standing on the corner of a sidewalk when a white pickup truck drove over the curb and hit the young man. The driver immediately fled the scene.

Soon after, the 24-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mill Creek officers are now searching for the vehicle, which witnesses described as a Chevrolet S-10 pickup. They believe the passenger side windshield and corner are damaged.

On Tuesday, James Couch was seriously injured after he was hit by a car. The army ranger had been home from Afghanistan for only one week when he became the victim of a hit-and-run car accident.
The incident happened less than a mile from the man’s home on Pierce County Road.

The 29-year-old soldier was rushed to Madigan Army Medical Center. He suffers from a broken leg, torn knee ligaments and road rash on his forehead.

Officers are still investigating the accident and are searching for the red 1990 Chevrolet pickup that hit the man.
