At Premier Law Group, we care deeply about the safety of bicyclists in the Seattle and Bellevue area. Attorney Jason Epstein is an avid bicyclist, along with his family and friends. It takes an attorney who understands the increased dangers bicyclists face when sharing the road with cars, trucks, and other obstacles to most effectively pursue a case on behalf of a bicyclist injured in an accident.
There were a little over 1,300 bicycle accidents in 2009 in the state of Washington alone. 110 of them resulted in serious injuries, and almost every single one of them produced some sort of minor injury. The majority of these bicycle accidents were collisions with cars, and in most of those cases it was the fault of the car driver. Unfortunately, even with protective gear like helmets and reflective material, the sheer speed and size of a car sometimes leads to fatalities. 9 bicyclists were tragically killed in bicycle accidents in 2009. If a loved one of yours was killed in a bicycle accident that was caused by the negligence of someone else, you may have grounds for a wrongful death case.
There are few things better than riding a bicycle around on a nice sunny day. We can’t keep accidents from happening, but we can help to deal with the monetary consequences if you happen to be hit by a car. Here at Premier Law Group, our experienced Seattle bicycle accident attorneys know how to fight the insurance companies to get you the money you need to cover your damages.
What factors play the biggest roles in bicycle accidents?
Distracted car drivers: The vast majority of bicycle accidents are caused by car drivers. In just under half of the bicycle accidents in 2009, a car driver failing to yield the right of way was considered in police reports to be a contributing circumstance. Accidents like these can oftentimes be caused out of inattention or distraction on the part of the car driver. Bicyclists have little to no time to react when this happens, and some of the most serious injuries happen this way. This is one of the main reasons why Jason Epstein, one of our Seattle injury lawyers, founded the organization “Teens Against Distracted Driving.” By increasing education about the dangers of cell phone use in cars, we are hoping to make the roads safer for everybody using them.
Location on the road: Because most streets have bicycle lanes, or otherwise allow bicyclists to ride in the same lanes that cars use, most Washington bicycle accidents occur in the roadway. It is important for anyone who rides a bike to realize that despite the fact that most accidents happen on the roadway, it is legal for you to be there unless a sign explicitly states otherwise. Not only is it legal to ride your bicycle on the road, it is much safer than on the sidewalk or anywhere else. While not every car driver appreciates bicyclists in the street, it is easier for them to notice you and avoid an accident.
Lack of Visibility: What both of the above issues really come down to is a lack of visibility. If you have not prepared for your ride with lights and reflective gear on your bike and clothing, it can lead to disaster. The unpredictable weather of Seattle make this especially important, as a bicyclist in the sleet with no high visibility gear can become basically invisible to a driver. Seattle is not known as the most bike friendly town, especially in urban areas, but trying to be unobtrusive can make for a dangerous situation. Protect yourself by making yourself seen!
