It seems the worst dangers on the roadways all start with the letter D; Drunk Driving, Drug Driving, and Distracted Driving. Being a Tacoma injury lawyer and Olympia wrongful death attorney I understand that these senseless accidents claim thousands of lives every single year and leave hundreds of thousands more with permanent injuries. Just this week a few seconds of inattention lead to a three-car accident which sent one man to Harborview.
On Thursday, January 27th a car struck a turning vehicle sending it into oncoming traffic. The Yelm car accident occurred at approximately 3:30 pm when a 1989 Ford pickup truck was stopped to make a turn from Bald Hills Road onto 128th Avenue just south of Yelm, Washington. A distracted driver approached the stopped truck in a passenger car, but failed to stop- hitting the pickup with enough force to send it into the opposite lane where it was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The truck rolled before finally coming to a rest on Bald Hills Road.
The truck driver was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries- two juvenile passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Providence St. Peter hospital for treatment.
The at-fault driver was cited for second degree negligent driving, but did not suffer any injuries in the auto accident.
More than 2 million people suffer permanent injuries from auto accidents every year in the United States and over 60,000 are killed. These statistics can be disheartening, especially when a lot of these injuries occur to innocent drivers who happen to be driving in the wrong place at the wrong time.
In order to better protect yourself from a serious auto accident follow these simple guidelines:
- Always obey traffic laws including speed limits, stop lights and stop signs
- Always buckle up- 60% of auto accident fatalities are due to improper seat belt use
- Do not drive distracted- put the cell phone down, pull over to set up your navigation system and pay attention to the road rather than your passengers
- Pay attention to your surroundings- watch the cars ahead, behind and to the sides of your vehicle
- Take a defensive driving course
