We’ve all been in that position where you are running late and have to decide between speeding to make up time, or accepting a tardy arrival. If my work as a Seattle auto accident attorney and Tacoma personal injury lawyer has taught me anything, it is that speeding leads to inattentive driving accidents and that trying to make up time is not worth the risk. This is backed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report that speeding is a factor in 31% of all fatal accidents. With that in mind, it just simply is not worth it to risk becoming a number in that statistic just to avoid being late.

Just after midnight last Thursday morning, a 19-year-old woman ran her car into a power pole as she failed to negotiate a curve driving to the Bainbridge ferry dock. Police officers saw the crash from the other side of the street, and rescued the woman before her car burst into flames. The collision knocked over the power pole, cutting electricity to 1600 nearby residents. The accident is said to have been a result of the driver speeding to catch the ferry. Police are saying that it was likely driver inattentiveness, rather than drugs or alcohol that caused the crash. The woman was taken to Harrison Medical Center, where she was treated and released with minor injuries.

An accident like this shows the danger of trying to make up time by speeding. Combined with the natural hazard of driving at night, speeding makes navigating the road a much more difficult task. As was the case in the above news story, curves become especially dangerous, because there is much less time to react. If you are going to be late somewhere, just accept it, and please do not try to make up time by speeding.
