The roads are never truly safe- even for extremely safe and cautious drivers you are not always able to protect yourself from negligent or aggressive drivers. But when another driver hits you, you will be compensated through their auto insurance policy- right?! Sadly, working with Seattle car accident victims as a Bellevue personal injury lawyer for the last several years I have come to the realization that this is not always the case. With 16% of drivers on the road driving uninsured the chance of the car hitting you not having adequate insurance is 1 in 6. And what happens when you are hit by an uninsured driver? A Hoquim, Washington family is finding that out.

Henry Oslund, a 90-year-old Hoquim resident is currently in ICU at Harborview Medical Center after being run over by an SUV three times. Oslund was walking in a local 7-11’s parking lot on September 14th when he was hit by an SUV. After being knocked to the ground by the initial hit the driver backed over Oslund and then ran over him again when he put his car back in drive. Oslund was rushed to Harborview where he remains in the intensive care unit undergoing a series of 5 different surgeries.

Since the accident occurred on private property and the driver was not behaving negligently he was sent home without so much as a slap on the wrist in spite of this being his 3rd offense of driving illegally without auto insurance. And now the Oslund family will be facing massive medical bills with little chance of justice because the laws are ineffective in this instance.

In order to protect yourself from the 30 million uninsured drivers you must purchase adequate under-insured and Uninsured Motorist insurance on your auto insurance policy. To learn more about Under-insured and Uninsured insurance and what an acceptable amount is click on the link above.

Medicare will cover some of the expenses for Henry Oslund’s medical care, but there will be quite a bit left up to the Oslund family. To help the family cover these expenses you may make a donation to the Henry Oslund fund at any US Bank branch.
