Working in a Bellevue personal injury law firm and serving as a Seattle pedestrian accident lawyer for several years I am constantly falling witness the horrible injuries sustain in pedestrian accidents. Pedestrians can fall victim to these accidents when simply walking through a parking lot, as happened in a recent Seattle pedestrian accident, but pedestrian inattention also leads to quite a few of these incidents. Some pedestrians abuse the pedestrian right-of-way law, jumping out in front of traffic that has no ability to stop in enough time to avoid the collision. One of these incidents occurred this week leaving a Seattle man in critical condition.

Wednesday, September 22nd a Seattle pedestrian accident occurred in North Seattle. At the 6700 block of Aurora Avenue a pedestrian jumped over a barrier onto the busy street jetting out in front of traffic.  The man was struck by a van soon after he entered the street followed by a truck seconds later. Because of the manner in which the pedestrian had entered the street the vehicles had no way of stopping in time to avoid the collision.

The man had crossed in a part of the road without a crosswalk in site and suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident. He was quickly taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

This pedestrian accident shows how important it is for pedestrians to follow laws and rules when walking near traffic. Abusing the right-of-way law and crossing onto busy streets where visibility is low is extremely dangerous.

There are some great tips for avoiding pedestrian accidents like this one on the Washington State Department of Transportation’s website

  • Use sidewalks
  • Cross at crosswalks and marked intersections
  • Make sure to check for traffic before entering the roadway- look left—then right—then left again before crossing
  • See and be seen- make sure traffic can see you as well as you see them
  • Don’t mix alcohol with walking along busy streets
  • Obey all traffic laws and signals- this will not only increase your safety, but ensure you do not receive a jay-walking ticket
