Driver Hits Two Pedestrians after Running Red Light| Seattle Pedestrian Injury Lawyer
Every year over 5,000 pedestrians are killed in auto-related accidents and over 60,000 others are injured. Statistics like these are a big reason why a lot of my focus as a Seattle pedestrian accident attorney and Bellevue personal injury lawyer is directed towards pedestrian collision cases. Walking down the street has the potential to be dangerous, because there are so many risky factors at play. Distracted drivers and drunk-drivers may not notice a pedestrian, and cars that don’t follow the rules of the road can put other lives in jeopardy.
Around 7:00 last night, a driver ran a red light in Lower Queen Anne and struck two pedestrians in the crosswalk. The two pedestrians, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s, were taken to Harborview Medical Center, but did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. According to police, the driver was examined at the scene by a drug recognition expert, but showed no signs of impairment. The driver was questioned and released by police, but the incident is still under investigation.
Although we don’t know if the driver intentionally ran the red light, a story like this should act as a wake-up call to remind everybody just how important it is to be alert as a driver and pedestrian. While this accident was clearly not the pedestrian’s fault, it never hurts to look both ways even if you have the right to cross the street. As a driver, running a red light is never acceptable. Even if it is an accident, it is likely due to inattentive or distracted driving, which should be recognized as a reason not to engage in distractions such as texting, e-mailing or talking on the phone while behind the wheel.
