A Hit and Run Accident in Sequim Sends 50-Year-Old to the Hospital

In accidents involving a car and a pedestrian, the pedestrian is extremely vulnerable to serious injury. The size and speed of a car combined with the inadequate protection that a pedestrian has produces some devastating injuries. As a Kirkland pedestrian accident attorney, even I was shocked to learn that in 2009, 4,000 people were killed in pedestrian accidents and 59,000 were injured.

A 50 year-old man was flown to Harborview Medical Center on Thursday morning after a hit-and-run accident in Sequim. Scott Franklin was struck by a car while walking on a sidewalk near East Washington Street at about 7:15 a.m. on Thursday according to Sequim police. Gene Mensik was arrested in the 600 block of West Washington Street under suspicion of hit-and-run, assault, and driving while intoxicated. Mensik,51, is scheduled for a first appearance in Clallam County Superior Court on Friday afternoon.

Both drivers and pedestrians need to be more aware of the dangers that motor vehicles pose to unprotected pedestrians. Pedestrians involved in traffic accidents often suffer horrible injuries. With these injuries come medical bills, time off work, and potential long term pain and suffering.
