In recent weeks, there have been a number of fatal bicycle crashes in the Seattle area, which brings up the subject of bicycle safety.  As a Seattle personal injury attorney I know how important it is to wear a helmet while cycling, but nothing can take the place of awareness as a bicycle safety measure.  Each year, hundreds of cyclists are killed in crashes in the United States, many of which are not technically the fault of the cyclist.  However, much like a motorcycle, a bicycle does not provide the inherent protection that a car does with windows and doors, seatbelts and air bags.  The chances of a collision being catastrophic to a cyclist are much more significant than the driver or passenger of a car.  The primary defense that a cyclist has is their awareness of surroundings and ability to avoid potentially dangerous situations.

A bicyclist was fatally injured in a crash on University Way in Seattle, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.  The cyclist, a delivery rider for a local sandwich shop, was about to cross University when a car made a right turn.  The rider was unable to stop or avoid collision with the car.  An ambulance crew happened to be on the scene, and the man was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he died shortly after arrival.  The driver of the car does not appear to have been impaired.

Of course, awareness and skill are imperfect protection, and each year a number of Federal Way cyclists are injured in collisions.  The consequences of a traffic collision can be severe, but also complicated.  If you have been injured in a bicycle accident an experienced Seattle bicycle accident attorney can explain your rights, and help you decide whether the driver of the car in your case was negligent.  Seattle bicycle accident attorney Jason Epstein has the experience that you need to protect your interests.  For more information, and a FREE CONSULTATION, contact Jason at Premier Law Group at 206.285.1743.
