As a Seattle motorcycle accident lawyer, I am always sad to hear about a young fatality due to reckless driving. Riding a motorcycle above the speed limit and illegally passing cars is a dangerous recipe for disaster. According to King 5 News, a fatal accident involving a motorcycle left a newly licensed driver dead at the scene. An 18 year old died just a half-hour after passing his motorcycle license test in Bellingham. The motorcycle crash occurred after David Swift attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control. Speeding and inattention to the road may have played a part in the devastating accident. Swift was riding along side his brother down a curved road immediately following his test when the accident occurred. Even though this tragic accident occurred in Bellingham, speeding and inattentive driving habits are often seen on neighboring roads of Seattle as well.

There is a separate motor-vehicle test to obtain your license to drive a motorcycle for a reason. Motorcycles can be very dangerous vehicles to operate and maintain on dangerous roads. Motorists and all other vehicles on the road should make sure to take cation and share the road by providing lots of space and being aware of any obstacles that may be in the road. Making sure to drive safely may save a life.

What makes this accident even more tragic was that it could have been prevented. Even with practice riding a motorcycle can be extremely dangerous. I can only hope that other riders, both young and old learn from this fatal accident and are more cautious when riding. With the rainy season upon us, experienced riders should be the only people on the street. My thoughts go out to this young man’s family.
