Two people were injured in an accident that happened near Shelton yesterday. The two men, 23-year-old Astagfarr Ahmath and 30-year-old Philip Estes, had to be retrieved by rescuers aboard a shellfish boat after the Honda CRV they were in fell into an embankment. Reports indicate that they had missed a turn on State Route 3 and attempted to turn around on the road when they backed over an embankment. Fortunately, both men were wearing their seatbelts and one of them called for help on his cell phone after the crash.

Estes, who suffered from back and neck pain, was transported to Mason General Hospital. Ahmath was last reported to be at Harborview Medical Center, where he was airlifted to in serious condition. Mason County Fire Chief Tim McKern is saying that it was fortunate the tide was out when the car fell into the embankment, as it worked in the rescue team’s favor. The community of Mason County came together in the rescue effort. The Squaxin Tribe sent help by boat.
